Why a Chinese Mountain Cat?
One of the most mysterious cats in the world. The Chinese Mountain Cat lives in the high alpine meadows of the Tibetan Plateau, and they're so rarely seen that the first verified photographs in the wild weren't taken until 2007. They have thick sandy coats, ice-blue eyes, and distinctive vocalizations that carry through the thin mountain air.
Did you know
Until the early 2000s, scientists weren't even sure the Chinese Mountain Cat was a distinct species. Recent DNA analysis confirmed it as its own species and revealed it has occasionally interbred with domestic cats living near rural Tibetan villages.
